Jenny Lind and P. T. Barnum Come to St. Louis, March 1851

Wednesday, October 12
Main Library, North Conference Room (4 West), 7:00pm
Speaker:Harlan Jennings, College of Music

Before dawn on a chilly March morning in 1851, a woman stepped off a steamboat in Missouri where a large crowd had gathered to catch a glimpse of her. What unfolded was the most exciting musical event St. Louis had ever witnessed: five concerts given by Jenny Lind, known as the "Swedish Nightingale," one of the most celebrated singers of all time. Under the brilliant management of circus magnate P.T. Barnum, Jenny Lind became a sensation. Her concerts commanded as much as $150 a seat, the equivalent of $3000 today. By marketing the singer as an emblem of feminine virtue and benevolence, Barnum managed to infect the entire nation with "Jenny Lind mania."

Harlan Jennings is associate professor of voice (baritone) at the Michigan State University College of Music. Dr. Jennings has sung with a number of regional opera companies, including the Cincinnati Opera, Michigan Opera Theater, and the St. Louis Municipal Opera, and is the author of numerous articles concerning opera in the American West.

Refreshments will be served.
